Veraine L. "Chick" Surman, Appleton, age 91, died Tuesday, July 9, 2024 after a short illness. She was born in Green Bay on August 4, 1932 to the late George and Helen (Lotto) Skaletski. Chick married La Vern "Toad" Surman on May 26, 1951 in Eaton, WI. Chick loved her flowers and enjoyed taking care of them. She was a wonderful seamstress, sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren. Chick treasured her family and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Chick and Toad loved traveling and always preferred to take the road less traveled over the highways. Their family takes great comfort in the fact that they are finally back together and are now traveling the backroads of heaven.
Chick is survived by her children: Debbie (Bob) Randerson of Greenville; Rick (Kim) Surman of Darboy; and Marty (Carole) Surman of Darboy; daughter-in-law, Barb Surman of Appleton; grandchildren: Craig (Susanne) Surman, Lori (Rob) Pagel, Eric Surman, Jill (Brian) Bobinski, Jenna (Simon) Ly, Matt (Erica) Randerson, Stacy (Chad) Lenhart, Jeff (Kari) Surman, Marissa (Ryan) Kasner, and Jared (Bonnie) Surman; great grandchildren: Johnathon, Kendra, Savannah, Kai, Evelyn, Gwendolyn, Alex, Thomas, Zeke, Serene, Everett, Peyton, Jacob, Wesley, Easton, Audrey, and Boyd; siblings: Mary Cisler, Jerry (Shirley) Skaletski, Jeanne Schaller, Danny (Bev) Skaletski, Michael (Charlene) Skaletski, and Anne Edwards; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Lavina Stephani, Violet Blohm, Rosemary Burton, Roselie Schweitzer, and Jerry Martin. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents, Chick was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Toad; son, Jim Surman; son-in-law, Tom Stein; great granddaughter, Brooke Ellen Pagel; siblings: Dalen (Grace), Tom (Carol), and Francis Skaletski; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Ardie Cisler, Tom Schaller, Jim Edwards, Verge (Toots) Surman, Virginia (Dick) Wachtendonk, Verona Martin, Erv Stephani, and Norm Blohm.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 18, 2024 at ST. BERNARD PARISH (1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton) beginning at 3:00 p.m. until the time of Mass at 5:00 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Demuth officiating. Committal Central Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery.
Chick is warmly remembered for her humor. In reference to this final event in her earthly life, she would have said, "Chick flew the coop!"
