Velma M. Wakershauser, Town of Lewiston, age 91, died Monday November 10, 2014 at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. She had recently moved to the Fox Valley to be close to her daughter. Velma was born in Lahouge, Illinois on January 20, 1923 to the late John and Maude (Monroe) Phipps. She married Richard R. Wakershauser at Fort Benning, GA on August 4, 1945.
Velma enjoyed deer hunting, gardening and crocheting. She was an active member of her church, belonging to the Mary and Martha, Homemakers, church and Homemaker's choirs, cemetery association and Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Velma also taught Sunday School for over 30 years. She belonged to other organizations as well, including the Pork Producers and Drainage Board and was a census taker. Velma was a C.N.A., working in private duty for many years before taking a position at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. She retired from the hospital after 27 years of service.
Velma is survived by her children: Roger Wakershauser (Linda Lynch) of Portage; and Dolly (Bill) Fischer of Kaukauna; grandchildren: Heather Leaman and Joseph (Amie) Fischer; three great grandchildren: Katelyn, Natalee and Makenna Leaman with her fourth great grandchild due in January; sister-in-law: Lorena Wakershauser; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Velma was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law: Edwin and Mamie Wakershauser; sisters-in-law: Evelyn (Walter) Schmidt and Wilma (Chester) Grossmann; and brothers-in-law: Lester (Marion), Kenneth (Janet) and Edward Wakershauser.
A memorial service will be held Sunday November 23, 2014 at ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH (W11355 Hwy. 127, Portage) at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. William Grimm will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
