Sylvester J. Geurts, Kaukauna, age 97, died Sunday, February 5, 2023. He was born in Little Chute on May 20, 1925 to the late William and Marie (Kortz) Geurts. Sylvester served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. He married Angela Hendricks at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church on November 23, 1946. They shared 70 years together before her death on January 23, 2017. Sylvester worked for Kaukauna Hardware for ten years before getting hired at the Kaukauna Fire Department. He retired in 1980 as Assistant Chief. He enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, camping, traveling, watching ball games, gardening, square dancing, and playing cards. He was a member of the Kaukauna V.F.W. Post 3319.
Sylvester is survived by his children: Rita Mayer, Linda (William) Schell, Lyle (Pam Gardiner), Glen (Connie), Keith (Carla), Steve, and Scott; grandchildren: Jim (Kristin) Mayer, Lisa (Anthony) Van Lannen, Matthew (Dani) Mayer, John (Linda) Schell, Brian (Erin) Schell, Jonathan (Jennie) Geurts, Matthew Geurts, Andrew (Katie) Geurts, Jenniffer (Kevin) Bruce, Angela Raff, Lori (Justin) Miller and Mark (Anne) Geurts; great grandchildren: John, Jacob and Jordan Mayer, Sidney (Chloe), Jackson and Celia Van Lannen, Taylor, Amber, Ashton and Logan Mayer, Derek (Melissa) Schell, Alethia (Dylan) Schroth, Morgan (Logan) Dorow, and Riley Schell, Charlee, Brynlee, Bodde, Josie, Hannah, Colin and Zoey Geurts, Dillon (Paloma) Bruce, Addison and Conlan Raff, Kaleb, Micah, Miriam, Eden, Jude, and Ruah Miller, Elias, Miles, and Hadley Geurts; great great grandchildren: Evey Jo Schell, Sawyer Schroth, Lennon and Scarlett Dorow; sisters: Joyce Nackers and Jane Coffey; sisters-in-law: Joan and Ione Geurts, and Jean Hendricks. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Angela, Sylvester was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Robert Mayer; great grandson, Tommy Mayer; brothers, Tom and William "Lefty" Geurts; sister, Joan (Harvey) Bowers; Angela's parents, Martin and Gertrude (De Bruin) Hendricks; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Howard Nackers, Don Coffey, Theresa (Joseph) Schmidt, Henry, Arthur (Martha), Ed (Gladys), and Leo (Mary Jane) Hendricks, Minnie (Pete) Hietpas, Inez (Ed) Ebben, Loretta (Les) Diedrich, and Agnes Hendricks.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 13, 2023 at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH – ST. MARY CHURCH (119 W. 7 th Street, Kaukauna) beginning at 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. Military Honors, conducted by the Kaukauna V.F.W. Post 3319 and American Legion Post 41 will immediately follow. Committal St. Mary Cemetery.
