Sybil
Flannery
September 11, 1924 – December 6, 2016
Sybil M (Johnson) Flannery, 92, died on December 6, 2016 at Theda Care Medical Center in Appleton, WI. Sybil was born on September 11, 1924, in Iredell County, North Carolina, to Henry and Beulah (Carter) Johnson. Sybil attended Nursing School in Statesville, North Carolina and worked in the OB/ Delivery section of the same hospital. Sybil married Vern Flannery in April of 1945 shortly before the end of World War II. He was in the Army Air Corps and they wanted to get married before he was shipped overseas. His deployment was cancelled because the war ended in June. After starting a family Sybil decided to be a stay at home Mom.
Sybil is survived by 9 children. Bruce (Barbara) Flannery, Menominee Falls, WI; Joy (Sam) Van Sambeek, Appleton, WI; Alice (Dave) Stieber, Kenosha, WI; Evelyn (Dennis) Chandler, Bakersville, NC; Chuck (Elizabeth) Flannery, Tucson, AZ; Michael (Lindsey) Flannery, Falmouth, KY; Brent (Cathy) Flannery, East Wenatchee, WA; Anita (Tommie) Dillard, Cleveland, NC; and Rebecca (Kevin) Lindsey, Marion, NC. Sybil is also survived by 33 grandchildren: Sheila, Brian, Jennifer, Sarah, Stacy, Russell, Annie, Christopher, James, Melissa, Daniel, Katie, Michael, Jesse, Quinn, Tammy, Megan, Derek, April, Lauren, Kelsey, Ryan, Gerilynn, Nicholas, Emily, Kristin, Jamie, Joe, Kathy, Amanda, Haley, Matthew and Amy. She is also survived by 44 Great Grandchildren and 2 sisters: Marianna (Grady) Speaks and Patsy Gantt.
Sybil was preceded in death by her husband, Vern Flannery; her daughter, Cynthia; 2 grandsons: Billy and David; and 1 great grandson, Haiden.
Sybil loved sewing and making quilts. No piece of material was wasted if it was big enough for a quilt square. She had quite a reputation for making delicious pies and cobblers. But above and beyond everything else she loved laundry the most. Washing, folding and ironing. I imagine none of us will have our ironing up to date ever again.
Memorial services are being arranged for June, 2017 in Bakersville, NC and burial will be in Rebels Creek Cemetery, Bakersville, NC.
Have wonderful reunions in heaven, Mom. We all love you and will miss you forever.
