Obituary

Sharon Ann Schmitz, age 61, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Donald and Sandy (Sager) Vanden Heuvel, she was born in Kaukauna on September 20, 1963.

Sharon spent her career with Ascension Medical Group, beginning at Midway Road when it was known as La Salle Clinic. Over the years, she held many roles and formed lifelong friendships. She loved live country music, especially John Karl, Chasin' Mason, and many other local bands that performed at Mile of Music. Sharon made numerous trips to Nashville with Ashley and cherished those experiences.

She enjoyed spending time with her fiancé, Jim. Together for nearly 15 years, they loved attending Mile of Music, gathering with family, and sharing a good meal. Above all, she treasured her family, especially her grandchildren.

Sharon is survived by her fiancé, Jim Miller; her children: Holly (Jeremy) Lazzaro of Appleton, Ashley (Tyler) Milhaupt of Little Chute, and Adam (Allayna) Schmitz; and her beloved grandchildren: Kaiden, Addison, Ni'Eva, Parker, Easton, Emery, and Elliette. She is also survived by her parents, Don and Sandy Vanden Heuvel of Kimberly; her brothers: Don (Vickie), Dan (Deanna), and Dave (Lisa) Vanden Heuvel; and her nieces and nephews: Danielle, Denae, Grant, Jacquie, Aly, and Matt. She is further survived by other relatives and many dear friends.

Sharon was preceded in death by her grandson, Vincent, as well as her grandparents, Orville and Gertrude Vanden Heuvel and Ralph and Mable Sager.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at O'CONNELL FUNERAL HOME (1776 E. Main Street, Little Chute) from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Her funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m., with Pastor James Schumann officiating.

A Celebration of Life will take place at Hollander's (1820 E. Main St., Little Chute) following the service. The family warmly invites all who wish to honor and cherish Sharon's memory to join in sharing stories, love, and remembrance. A memorial is being established.

Sharon's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Ascension Medical Group, especially Dr. Aditya Rangbulla and Megan Law, for their dedicated care and compassion throughout her time with Ascension—not only as a patient but also as a colleague and friend. Their guidance in making final decisions regarding her care plan ensured that she remained comfortable until the end. Special thanks also to Sharon's boss, Kristina Fitzgerald, as well as the ICU staff and hospice care team, for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
