Obituary

Roger H. Smith, age 89, died in Appleton on Sunday, August 6, 2023. He was born in De Tour, Michigan, to the late Harold and Julia (Challe) Smith on November 10, 1933. Roger married the love of his life, Barbara Benson, on June 5, 1954, at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. Together, they raised their five children. Roger was employed through the Steamfitter's Local 400 Union, until his retirement in 1995. His favorite things in life were Harness Racing, woodcarving, and spending time with his family at the family cottage in Townsend, WI.  He was an avid Timber Rattlers fan.  Roger also enjoyed volunteering with Builders for Christ, helping to build many churches.

Roger is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara; his children: Brenda (Mike) Schumacher, Sturgeon Bay; Darrel (Deb) Smith, Blanchard, OK; Lynn Harp, Kaukauna; Dave (Donna) Smith, Combined Locks; and Skip (Deb) Smith, Little Chute; and his grandchildren: Nicole (Mark) Lange, Matt (Cecelia) Schumacher, Kate (Kirk) Parker, Luke (Annie) Schumacher, Coy (Jill) Smith, Cas (Devin) Smith, Cal (Emily) Smith, Joshua Mc Kee, Christopher Mc Kee, Tyler Mc Kee, Ben (Jamie) Harp, Sam Harp, Angela (Brandon) Raddant, Alex (Laura) Smith, Autumn (fiancé Josh Hilgendorf) Smith, Jake (Monica) Smith, Hannah (Wes) Hietpas, Maggie (Nick) Fisher, and Sarah (Alex) Bauman. Roger is further survived by 30 great grandchildren; his brother, Lloyd (Nancy) Smith; his brother-in-law, Bill (Shirley) Benson; sisters-in-law, Nancy Benson and Beverly Benson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his infant grandchild, Nate; sisters: Eileen (Walter) Stoeger and Karen Janssen; daughter-in-law, Michelle Smith; son-in-law, Mike Harp; and siblings-in-law: Jacqueline (Dick) Nolte, Loren Benson, and Steve Benson.

Visitation for Roger will be held Friday, August 11, 2023, at ST. LUKE LUTHERAN CHURCH (705 E. Greenfield Drive, Little Chute) beginning at 12:00 Noon until time of Funeral at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ronald Szep officiating. Committal Bayside Cemetery in Sturgeon Bay.
