Robert J. Vandenberg, Silver Cliff, formerly of Little Chute, age 65, died unexpectedly Monday December 1, 2014. He was born in Appleton on October 14, 1949 to the late Raymond and Margaret (Vander Wyst) Vandenberg. After graduation from St. John's High School in 1967, Bob was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.
Bob married Susan Alger on January 14th, 1972 at St. Mary's Church in Kaukauna and they later resided in Little Chute.
Bob worked at Thilmany Papers as a paper machine tender and paper machine supervisor for 42 years. After his retirement in 2008, Bob and Sue moved to their retirement home in Silver Cliff, WI and for the past 4 years wintered in Texas.
Bob was a true outdoorsman and had a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He took many wonderful trips with his friends and his family to Alaska, Colorado, Kansas and Canada. Bob enjoyed hosting fish fries for his family and friends and no one ever left hungry. He loved to be outside splitting wood, feeding the birds and golfing in his Monday/Thursday league. Bob was very handy and was known to help his neighbors with all their projects. Most people know he could fix just about anything. Bob was also a volunteer for the Silver Cliff Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Bob is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sue; children: Amy (Jim) Sebert of Fond du Lac; Mark (Jessie) Vandenberg of Darboy; grandchildren: Sydney, Mack, Kaleb, Kyla and Brooke; sisters: Kathy Haupt and Lori (Tom) Paque; brothers: Mike, Gary (Mary) and Dan (Deb) Vandenberg; and sister-in-law: Jill Alger. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death in by Susan's parents: Bernard and Gloria (Huss) Alger; and brother-in-law: Bob Haupt.
Visitation will be held Friday December 5, 2014 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 Pine St. Little Chute) from 2:00 p.m. until time of Mass at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Ronald Belitz will officiate. Military rites conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Green Bay Chapter 224 will immediately follow.
In addition to the funeral in Little Chute, a memorial gathering will be held Saturday December 20, 2014 at the Silver Cliff Town Hall, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
