Obituary

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Nancy J. Schmechel, age 86, who departed this life peacefully on July 25, 2025 in her sleep.

Born in Green Bay, WI., Nancy lived a full life rooted in love, kindness, and an unshakable appreciation for the natural world. A lifelong gardener, she found joy in the quiet moments spent among blooming flowers, sunlit trees, and the steady rhythm of the seasons. Her green thumb was unmatched, and her home was always surrounded by vibrant gardens that seemed to bloom just a little brighter because of her tender care.

She was the beloved wife of Eugene C. Schmechel, with whom she shared over 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2019. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three devoted daughters, who were their pride and joy.

In later years, she found peace in the Northwoods, where she and her husband spent many cherished days soaking in the calm of lakes, forests, and starry skies. Whether planting perennials, bird-watching, or simply enjoying a quiet morning coffee on the porch, she was always most at home when surrounded by nature. She was also very proud of other achievements such as acting, writing, and receiving her bachelor degree at age 50.

We are most proud of Moms strength living with Alzheimers for over 10 years.

Nancy is survived by her three daughters: Lori VanEssen (Bob Howard), Lisa Zuleger and Lynn Schmechel; her grandchildren: James (Aleka), Cassandra (Chris), Weston (Mackenzie), Astina (Steve), Mykal (Aubrey), Payton and Chloey; and great grandchildren: Mya, Mikail, Anya, Eden, Vera, Kolby, Kase and Anna.  She is also survived by her siblings:  Dick (Lucy) Lange, Gerald Lange, Pat (Tom) Lamberg, and Carla (Dean) Harris; and brothers-in-law and their spouses: Roger (Merideth) Schmechel and Jeff (Paula) Schmechel.

She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Harriet Lange; sister-in-law, Mary Lange; and Gene's siblings and their spouses:  Beverly (Loyd) Kolb, Ray (Marlene) Schmechel and Bob (Pat) Schmechel.

Many dear friends and extended family will miss her warmth, gentle spirit, and nurturing heart. She will also be missed by Lisa's dog Louie who visited her often.

A celebration of life will be held on September 28th at the Botanical Gardens, Green Bay, WI. from 1:30-5:30 pm, and a private memorial at one of her favorite garden spaces in the Northwoods where her ashes will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Botanical Gardens, Green Bay Wisconsin, a beautiful place that reflects the life she so gracefully lived and at which she was a founding member.

Her hands may be still, but the seeds she planted—in both soil and hearts—will continue to bloom for years to come.
