Obituary

Marie H. Thiel, Appleton, age 99, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, January 6, 2024.  She was born in the Town of Buchanan on February 4, 1924 to the late Arnold and Mary (Nytes) Verbeten.  Marie married Earl C. Thiel on October 26, 1946 at St. Paul Parish in Wrightstown.  Together, they raised their family as members of Sacred Heart Parish, where she was a very active volunteer.  Marie was a past trustee of the parish, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and also volunteered with Sacred Heart Athletics and the Ladies of Sacred Heart Parish (serving as president from 1962-63).  Marie retired from Schmalz Auto Inc. in 2012 after 34 years of service.  She also worked at Louis Blinder Roofing - Gold Bond and Hi-Way 55 Auto in her earlier years.  Marie volunteered with the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary for 50 years and enjoyed attending the Attic Theatre.

She was a charter member of the Xavier Booster Club and served as their treasurer for many years.  Marie received the Red Smith Award in 1983 and the Xavier High School Coaches Service Award in 1989 for her dedicated service to Xavier Athletics.  She actively followed Xavier Basketball for many years.

Marie is survived by her children:  Richard (Patti), Combined Locks; Janice Ellerman, Waterloo; Gary (Diane), Appleton; Stephen (Jenny Carr), Madison; Dennis, Appleton; David (Rita), New London; and Michael (Bonnie), Cleveland, OH; 20 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and siblings:  Luke Verbeten and Germaine Smith.  She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In addition to her parents, and husband Earl, Marie was preceded in death by her siblings:  Mark (Fran) Verbeten and Genevieve (Robert) Ambrosius; father and mother-in-law:  Michael and Charlotte Thiel; brothers and sisters-in-law:  Roman (Esther) Thiel; Florence (Bud) Salm, Bernice (Al) Polishinski, Deloris (Red) Hogan, and Alice Dryer.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024 at SACRED HEART PARISH (222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton) from 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Katamba officiating.  A memorial is being established.
