Van Gompel
July 15, 1931 – March 29, 2022
Marcellus (Dumps) (Marc) Van Gompel, formerly from Little Chute, Gillett, and Kimberly, passed away at the age of 90, on March 29, 2022. Marcellus was born on July 15, 1931 to the late Anton and Marie (Jansen) Van Gompel. He married June Verhagen in 1954 and was a faithful husband until her death in 1986. Marcellus and June had four boys, their first son died at birth at was not given a name; Russell (Mary Jo) VanGompel of Winneconne and their children Marc (Andrea) and their daughter Emma, Matthew (Nicole); Greg(Conni) Van Gompel of Savage, MN and their daughter Jenna, and her children Lily and Rose; and Tim (Carol) Van Gompel of Green Bay and their children Cassie and Samantha, and Carol's two children: Jennifer (Joel) Thompson, and their children: Brianna and Brody; Danielle (significant other Bill) Peterson and their child; Gabriel.
In 1989 Marcellus married Mary (Desch) Michalkiewicz and accepted her children and into the family. They include Susan (Dan) Stanczak of Menasha and their children Tanya (Marcus) Portee, Heather, and Amber (Brice) Taoko; Daniel (Patricia) Michalkiewicz of Appleton and their children Marissa and Mason; and Tony (Kim Edens) Michalkiewicz of Rochester, MN. Marc and Mary enjoyed their time together especially the years they spent with family and friend at their home on Moshawquit Lake. Marc was preceded in death by Mary in 2018.
Marcellus worked for Riverside Paper Corporation for 39 years after serving in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a proud member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 and served the Legion as Chairman of the Rifle Honorary Guard. He also flew on the Old Glory Honor Flight in September 2013. Marcellus also enjoyed being a Packer season ticket holder and watching sports. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed watching birds.
Marcellus is survived by one sister, Linda (Norb) Weyers; and brothers and sisters-in-law: James (Myra) Verhagen, Eugene (Sandy) Verhagen, Grace (Carl) Fiested, Doug Verhagen, Darlene Havel, Jo Anne (Loras) Sabers, Catherine Van Gompel, and Peter Schmalz; and many other nieces, nephews, and god children. The family would especially like to thank his niece and goddaughter, Vicky Vosters who would bring him meals, cut his hair, and visit with him at Country Villa.
In addition to his parents and his two wives, Marcellus was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Regina Van Gompel, Josie (Herb) Lom, Millie (Bob) Walker, Jenny Schmalz, Richard (Audrey) Van Gompel, James Van Gompel, Henry Van Gompel; brothers and sisters-law: Wally (Fran) Verhagen, Carol Ann Desch, James Havel; his special mother-in-law Delaphine Verhagen; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 1, 2022, at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CHURCH (411 Vandenbroek Street, Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Msgr. James Vanden Hogen will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
Marc's family extends a special thank you to the staff at Country Villa and Moments Hospice nurses, especially Tyler.
