Lloyd L.
Mccabe
September 18, 1947 – June 3, 2024
Dr. Lloyd Leon McCabe passed away peacefully at Cherry Meadows on June 3rd, 2024 at the age of 76 surrounded by his loving family after a complicated journey with cancer. At the time of his passing he lived part-time in Menasha, WI and Dunedin, FL.
On September 18, 1947 Dr. McCabe, or Lloyd as he asked people to call him, was born at the hospital in Junction City, Kansas, near his family's home in rural Alta Vista, Kansas. Lloyd was the fifth generation of his mother's family to live in that house. Lloyd's love of genealogy inspired him to study his own family history going back 10-15 generations. Family has been the anchor, the rudder and the sail for his life.
The first eight years of Lloyd's life were so formative. His parents, Ruth Roemaine Scott McCabe and Chester Earl McCabe let him roam the farmstead, the creek and the old buildings. He was a risk taker early on. A lifelong conservationist and active outdoors person, Lloyd always found peace and joy in nature.
Lloyd was married to Jane Anne McDonald on November 23, 1974 in Iowa City, IA. Together they were blessed with four wonderful children: Jennifer McCabe, Meghan (Chris Bouchette) McCabe, Michael (Emily) McCabe, and Julia (Brian) Stoffel. Lloyd is survived by eight grandchildren that he loved deeply: Moira McCabe, Owen Sparhawk, Josie McCabe, Margaret McCabe, Eliza McCabe, Hope Stoffel, Jonathan Stoffel, and Noah Stoffel.
Dr. McCabe graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1965, ranked 518/556. Lloyd was discounted as never being someone that would pursue higher education. People from his high school days remember him for his attention seeking antics, sense of humor and disrespect for authority. The seven years following graduation were filled with decisions that brought consequences that were formative in shaping who Lloyd would become. Lloyd graduated with honors from: Kirkwood Community College ('74); Mt. Mercy College, ('75); BS in Psychology from the University of Iowa, ('77); Masters of Social Work from St. Thomas University,('95); PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Wisconsin -Madison ('01). From barely graduating high school, to becoming a Hawkeye and Badger, Lloyd was a lifelong learner who walked his own path.
Lloyd was a worker and true giver, passionate about service to the underserved and dedicated his life to changing the lives of kids through education-as a social worker, adolescent and family therapist, and director of special education. Dr. McCabe's career culminated in the role of school district superintendent. Over a 13-year span, he served as superintendent across Wisconsin in Barneveld, Waupun, and Kaukauna. As a superintendent Lloyd developed a wide circle of friends, people to share a cup of coffee or adult beverage with. The mutual support and familiarity with his colleagues was important to him.
Lloyd is preceded in death by an infant son Ryan, parents Chester Earl McCabe and Ruth Roemaine (Scott) McCabe, brother Kevin Scott McCabe, mother in law Margaret McDonald, brother in law Larry McDonald, and nephew David Jolly. Many cousins and friends have also passed.
Lloyd is survived by his brother Roe Clayton (Colleen) McCabe, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and in-laws.
When reflecting of peak experiences, Lloyd once listed: marriage to "my sweet Jane Anne", the birth of each child, coaching each of my children's youth basketball teams, riding my bicycle across Iowa five times, riding my motorcycle to Alaska and all four corners of the US, and watching my children and now grandchildren, succeed and grow into good, kind human beings, each giving much more than they take.
Lloyd's life is a testament that every human being has great worth and can change their life no matter the circumstance. He was ranked in the bottom 93 percent of his graduating high school class and against many obstacles and adversity went on to graduate college and obtain a PhD. His story inspired him to dedicate his life to helping kids and rooting for the underdog. He encouraged his children to always remain curious, lifelong learners and to leave the world a better place when leaving it than when you came in.
Lloyd's faith journey was of great importance to him, and his favorite Bible verse was:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."
-2 Timothy 4: 7-8
