LeRoy James Goldbeck, 89, went to his eternal home in heaven on Thursday, June 29, 2017, welcomed into the presence of God by his Savior Jesus Christ. LeRoy was born at home in Racine, Wisconsin on April 13, 1928, to Oscar Julius and Hansine Marie (Hjorth) Goldbeck, the youngest of three children. LeRoy represented well his Danish heritage and opportunities as a first generation American.
His first job was bagging groceries. As a teen he worked summers at a tank plant during the war. He learned masonry from his father, later using that skill to create beautiful brick and stone work at each of his houses, and for family and friends. LeRoy graduated from Racine Park High School, lettering in football, wrestling, and track and was a member of a championship rifle team. He was selected by his high school chemistry teacher for an intern job at S.C. Johnson, working as a Lab Technician while attending technical school and later during college breaks. He worked in the famous Research Tower designed by Frank Lloyd Wright when the building was first open. served in the United States Army Reserves for 6 years.
After technical school, he transferred to Lawrence College, where he met Nancy Owen while both were members of a college touring choir. During college he earned money delivering flowers for Memorial Florists. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. LeRoy graduated from Lawrence with a Chemistry degree, and he and Nancy were married on June 23, 1956 in Neenah. LeRoy expected to return to Racine upon graduation, but instead was offered a position at Kimberly-Clark Corporation at the Main Office building in Neenah. He worked at K-C for 32 years as a Research Chemist, Research Library Supervisor and later in the Legal Department as a Patent Researcher and another 10 years as a Patent Consultant. He was awarded 4 patents.
LeRoy and Nancy raised their family in Neenah, celebrating 61 years of marriage in 2017. They traveled around the US, to the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Denmark, Wales, Europe and China and took a cruise to Alaska. They wintered in California and later in Hawaii for almost 20 years.
Throughout his life, LeRoy was active in Bible study groups, forming life-long friendships while deepening his faith. He and Nancy were in the church choir for many years together, and LeRoy served in numerous areas of the church, including deacon, building committee, and Vacation Bible School. LeRoy and Nancy were baptized in Lake Winnebago early in the morning on a summer day, followed by a pancake breakfast at their nearby home. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church.
LeRoy learned sailing and joined the Neenah-Nodaway Yacht Club. He and Nancy raced their boat Goldilocks on Lake Winnebago, and in 1965 his crew was yacht club champion of the year. He was a former Jaycees member, PTA president and as Neenah Music Parents president, raised funds to purchase band uniforms still in use over 40 years later.
LeRoy used his talent for construction and general contracting, building three of his own houses, and home for daughter Julie, and assisting friends and church with construction projects. He took on a major renovation project when he and daughter Wendy purchased the Kimberly Double House on Wisconsin Avenue, saving Neenah's historic 1848 home for future generations. He enjoyed wood-working, making beautiful tables from Hawaii's exotic wood and carved jewelry from petrified ivory.
LeRoy was Town of Neenah Supervisor for 6 years and Town Chairman for 4 years, on various county committees and ran for State 56th Assembly Representative. He supported many candidates for political office as a member of the Winnebago Republican Party. LeRoy was currently Resident Council Vice-President at Touchmark, and board member for The Jeske Company.
Where ever he was, LeRoy connected with neighbors, friends and co-workers developing deep friendships lasting many years.
LeRoy is survived by his wife Nancy Goldbeck; children: Julie Hawkins, Linda (Jim) Spranger, Wendy (Greg) Baranczyk, Paul (Julie) Goldbeck; grandchildren: Carolyn (Jacob) Towns, Mathew Spranger, Tim (Maddy) Spranger, Amy (Marcus) Croll, Kacie Reagan, Allyson (Chuck) Pratt, Zachary Reagan (friend Kate), Benjamin Goldbeck; step-grandchildren: Maria (Craig) Martin, Spencer Baranczyk (friend Brianna); great-grandchildren: Madelyn and Isaac Towns, Chayse and Charlly Pratt; brother-in-law George Beniash, and niece Heather Johnson; sister-in-law Pat Owen; cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Oscar and Marie Goldbeck; sister: Ethel Beniash; brother: Robert Goldbeck; Nancy's parents: Ambrose and Marion Owen; brother-in law: John Owen.
***PLEASE NOTE ALL VISITATION WILL BE HELD AT CHURCH***
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 6, 2017 at CALVARY BIBLE CHURCH (1450 Oakridge Rd. Neenah) beginning at 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Funeral at 11:00 a.m.
Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Fox Valley Christian Academy.
