Larry L.
Behnke
February 20, 1953 – January 20, 2024
Larry L. Behnke, age 70, of Menasha, passed away on January 20, 2024, at his home surrounded by love after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Larry was born on February 20, 1953, to the late Richard "Buddy" and Ida (Custer) Behnke, who resided on a family farm in Hilbert.
Larry married Carol Champeau on March 17, 1973, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hilbert, Wisconsin. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th anniversary last year. Larry would tell you he knew the secret to a long marriage and with a smile on his face, he'd say, "If my wife is happy, I'm happy." Their two daughters, Nichole and Kristy, were a welcome addition to the family and from that moment on Larry and Carol's lives were enriched. Each one blessed with their own special gifts. Mike, their son-in-law, volunteered many hours helping wherever needed and always when it really mattered without complaint. Five grandchildren have been the icing on the cake. They have kept their Grandma and Grandpa young. Always entertained with robotics, basketball, volleyball, soccer games, concerts, and dance recitals.
Larry has always loved people and he never had a conversation with anyone without adding a few chuckles to the mix. He spent the first half of his career at General Beer in Little Chute and the second half at Marv's Refrigeration Services of Green Bay (later Greg's) where he retired. Over his career, it was important to him that he never asked anyone to do something he couldn't do himself. He cared about people and was happy to invest in anyone who was willing to learn. He thought of his fellow co-workers and customers as friends, which led to many repeat customers.
He was very involved with the Jaycees and was an instrumental part of getting Memorial Music Fest off the ground. He was proud of the festival's success and all the hard work put into the many projects the Appleton Jaycees were involved in that benefited the community. Larry was also a key player in the start-up of the Miller-sponsored Monday Night Kickoff show at the Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton. He loved the chance to meet and greet Packer players along with the many fans who packed the room on Monday nights during the season.
Larry would tell you his job had his mind, the family had his heart, and the Lord his soul. His nickname was "Larry the Legend" and if you knew him, you'd know why. He's been our solid rock and will be sadly missed by all who knew him and, in our hearts, forever.
Special thanks to Larry's baby sister, Cheryl, and her mother-in-law, Connie, for all the love they poured into our family. Also, a big thank you to Theda Care Hospice nurse, Lexie. She is truly special and has helped us get through this difficult time. We greatly appreciated Larry's CNA, Claudia, as well.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol, as well as his two daughters: Nichole (Michael) Hirschfield of Appleton and Kristy Behnke of Kaukauna. He is further survived by five cherished grandchildren: Cole, Connor, Cailyn, Grace, and Greta Hirschfield; sister: Cheryl (Mike) Hussar; aunts: Myra Daul and Ann Behnke; as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents: Richard "Buddy" and Ida Behnke, and siblings: Harlan (Louise) Behnke and Charlene (Tom) Witzke.
