Justin James
Trentlage-Van Gompel
July 12, 2002 – March 6, 2025
Justin James Trentlage-Van Gompel, age 22, took his glorious flight home to Heaven on Thursday, March 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. Justy Bear was born 3 months early on July 12, 2002, with angel wings already on earth. From the moment he was born he emanated strength and was surrounded by the unconditional love of his Mom and Dad, his cherished siblings Carley and Jake, and special family members.
Through so many medical odds beaten, mountains climbed, and hospital stays endured, Justin's resilience, compassion, love of life, and pure innocence was contagious and touched every heart and soul he met. Our sweet boy adored all things water—from swimming and fishing to watering plants in the backyard. Justin's Cove on Lake DuBay held a special place in Justin's heart; it was discovered and named by his grandfather, Jim Trentlage. He delighted in savoring ice cream and his Grandma Diane's homemade ham gravy with mashed potatoes. Justy Bear's favorites included mylar balloons, Scout, lullaby toys, Baby Shark, Miss Rachel, and all things Disney—from princesses to Marvel.
Justin found joy in art projects with his sister Carley, inspiring his brother Jake's engineering creations, and spending time outside with his youngest sibling, Brendenn. Some of his favorite outdoor activities were: sparklers, swings, bounce houses, riding horses, tricycles, carousels, and playing catch with his dog Nash. He treasured walks in the woods with Mom and Dad, setting up turkey blinds, just as much as he loved strolling down State Street in Madison and basking on the Terrace with family, including his sister-in-law, Sam. We could go on forever, but Justin's deepest joy was simple—he loved cuddling and being held. His playful humor shined through sly smirks and quick grabs of stethoscopes, hair, necks, and ears.
Justy Bear's sweet, amazing smile lit up every room, every second of every day. He defined the glorious gift of life, teaching us to cherish it fully and never take it for granted. Knowing no strangers, he blew endless kisses to all who were willing to catch them. If you asked Justin where his heart was, he'd tap his chest and smile at you—and now, his heart lives on forever in all of us.
Justin is survived by his parents, Michael and Robin Van Gompel; his siblings, Carley Van Gompel, Jake Eichinger (Sam), and Brendenn Van Gompel; his niece, Emma Eichinger; his grandparents, Diane Trentlage, Gail Trentlage, Marilyn Davis, and Alan Van Gompel (Mary); his aunts and uncles, Yvonne Trentlage-Poeschl, Anthony Trentlage, Katie Gerhartz (Mike), Dale Reuter (Carrie), Jodi Tenor (Doug), and Chad Van Gompel; as well as his cousins: Anna, Lauryn, Mikaila, Bennett, Chelsea, Peyton, Hailie, Kristin, and many more.
Justin was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jim Trentlage and Jim Davis; his uncle, Travis Trentlage; and his great-grandparents.
A heartfelt thank you to his dedicated medical teams at Ascension, UW Hospitals, and American Family Children's Hospital—especially Dr. Benny Iskandar and Dr. Kurt Heyrman—for years of gracious care, support, and love; and to the Unity Hospice Team for keeping Justin comfortable at home, surrounded by family.
