John J. Van Vonderen, age 73, died Sunday, May 17, 2026, in Appleton with his family by his side. John was born in Kaukauna to the late Joseph and Luella (Petit) Van Vonderen on January 26, 1953. He attended Holy Cross grade school and graduated Kaukauna High School in 1971. John dedicated many years to his career at Thilmany Paper, before his retirement.
John liked playing cards with family and going to a live concert or plays. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a self-taught sportsman who enjoyed sharing his knowledge and experiences with friends and family. Deer hunting brought many special memories over the years, and it was something he always looked forward to.
John is survived by his children: Cory (Dawn) Van Vonderen, Carrie (Nick) Van Vonderen, and Josh Van Vonderen; his grandchildren: Dannielle Hietpas, Cody Van Vonderen, Dylan Van Vonderen, Ali Vanevenhoven, and Amelia Hinn; along with his 9 great grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings: Shirley Abts, Karen (Tom) Portman, and Lynn (Jim) Landers.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his grandchild, Keri Bauer; brother, Gary Van Vonderen; and brother-in-law, Larry Abts.
Visitation for John will be held at O’CONNELL FUNERAL HOME (1776 E. Main Street, Little Chute) on Thursday, May 21, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at 10:45 a.m. Funeral will follow at 11:00 with Deacon Steve Vande Hey officiating. Committal Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna.
