Obituary

John L. Rietveld, Combined Locks, age 91, passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, February 12, 2022.  He was born in Nuenen N.B. Holland on January 10, 1931 to the late Peter and Bertha (Gietman) Rietveld.  After immigrating to the United States in 1950, John joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1952-54.  He married Harriet Koenen at St. Paul Parish on July 2, 1953.  She preceded him in death on March 21, 2009.  John was a proud veteran and served as the Commander for the Heart of the Valley V.F.W. Post 10544 and as the Chaplain for the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 for many years.  As Chaplain, he and the members of his post conducted countless funeral honors for his fellow veterans.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking.  John also was a member of the choir at St. Paul Parish.  His greatest pride and joy was his family and he cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John is survived by his children:  Mike Rietveld, Combined Locks; Dan (Lou Ann) Rietveld, Kaukauna; and Sally (Don) Schuerer, Appleton; grandchildren:  Sandy (Dan) Storch, Tim (Jill) Rietveld, Doug (friend Heather) Rietveld, Melissa (Brian) Smits, Cathy (Eric) Vander Pas, Matthew (friend Emily) Schuerer, and Thomas (fiancé Abby) Schuerer; great grandchildren:  Ryan and Addy Storch, Emily and Morgan Rietveld, Harper and Owen Smits, and Hadley and Baby Vander Pas; brother, Tony (Donna) Rietveld; and sisters-in-law:  Margie Rietveld, Jane Rietveld, Margaret Pennings; and  brother-in-law George Heider. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, members of Francine Behn's family, other relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife Harriet, John was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law:  George and Johanna (Verhallen) Koenen; daughter-in-law, Judy Rietveld; longtime companion, Francine Behn; sister, Mary (Casey) Bavinck; brothers:  Frank (Cora), Ray (Ann), Peter, Adrian (Theresa), Gerald, and Ted Rietveld; and brothers and sisters-in-law:  Ada (Rick) Van Ryzin, Ted (Millie) Wachtendonk, Jo Heider, Gertrude Koenen, Tony Koenen, and Margaret Koenen.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at ST. PAUL PARISH (410 Wallace Street, Combined Locks) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Zuleger officiating.  Military Honors, conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 and Heart of the Valley V.F.W. Post 10544, will immediately follow.  Committal St. Paul Cemetery.

The family thanks the team from Ascension at Home and Ascension St. Elizabeth's Hospital for the special care provided to dad.
