Obituary

Jack Schommer, Freedom, age 85, entered eternal life on Sunday January 13, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Hospital with his family at his side. He was born in Little Chute on January 20, 1927 to the late John and Nellie (Hammen) Schommer. Jack served in the Navy as a Seaman First Class and was stationed in Hawaii. He married Mary "Mae" Geurts at St. Nicholas Parish on August 18, 1951. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2012. Together, they loved to travel, whether it was winter trips to California and Florida or trips abroad. Jack's faith played a large role in his life, praying the rosary with Mae daily. Jack retired from United Grocers in 1986. He was a member of St. Nicholas Parish. Jack loved to socialize with family and friends. He was a jokester and could be counted on for a one-liner for each occasion. Jack enjoyed bowling and playing cards, especially Sheephead. He was a member of the Freedom VFW Post 7692, the Knights of Columbus and the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department. Jack also enjoyed gardening, puttering around in the yard, feeding his birds and watching the Packers.

Jack is survived by his children: Susan (Terry) Muenster, Seymour; Bill "Baldy" (special friend Sandi Ryan), Florence; Bob (Donna), Freedom; Rick (Cindy), Freedom; and Stacey, Stevens Point; grandchildren: Jason (Leah), Kristin and Cody (special friend Marsha) Muenster, Nicole, Craig, Eric, Brett, Adam and Alyssa Schommer; great grandchildren: Zachary, Jacob and Elliana Muenster; brothers and sisters-in-law: Ivo (Mary) Geurts, Eileen Weins, Ursie (Jerry) Zwiers and Joe (Shirley) and Rita Geurts. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Derrick and Annie Schommer; father and mother-in-law: Albert and Mary (Vandenberg) Geurts; sisters and brothers: Alice (Marvin) Murphy, Earl (Jackie), Robert (Sally) and Florence Schommer; and sister and brother-in-law: Marge (Joe) Rosenberg and John Geurts.

Visitation will be held Wednesday January 16, 2013 at O'CONNELL FUNERAL HOME (1776 E. Main Little Chute) beginning at 4:00 p.m. until time of Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday January 17, 2013 at ST. NICHOLAS PARISH (W2037 County Road S Freedom) beginning at 11:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Daniel Felton will officiate. Committal will take place in St. Nicholas Cemetery, where Military Rites will be conducted by the Freedom VFW Post 7692.
