Fr. Giles N. (John) Soyka O.F.M. Cap., age 86, died Saturday July 3, 2010 at St. Paul Home. He was born in Milwaukee on July 28, 1923 to the late Anthony and Adoline (Ehr) Soyka. Fr. Giles was Invested as a Capuchin August 31, 1941, He made his First Profession of Vows September 1, 1942, Solemn Profession of Vows Sept 1, 1945 and was ordained to the Priesthood April 12, 1950. He served as a professor at the Capuchin Seminary at Mt. Calvary and was the Novice Director in both Baraga and Detroit, MI. Fr. Giles was a hospital chaplain in Milwaukee, Huntington, IN and Michigan. He also offered spiritual assistance to the Secular Franciscans in Milwaukee and was chaplain to various convents. Fr. Giles loved to play the keyboard.
Fr. Giles is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Soyka, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony and Daniel Soyka.
A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 7, 2010 at MONTE ALVERNO RETREAT CENTER. Visitation will be held Thursday July 8, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. at MONTE ALVERNO RETREAT CENTER (1000 N. Ballard Rd. Appleton). Fr. John Celichowski, Capuchin Provincial Minister, will officiate. Committal Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
