Obituary

Fr. Silas (Gerald) Baumann, OFM Cap., 87, a native of Wausau, died in Appleton, May 2, 2013. Fr. Silas taught Chemistry at St. Lawrence Seminary High School for over 20 years. He also served as spiritual director for the Secular Franciscans in the Fond du Lac and Fox Valley area. He often said how much he enjoyed living the community life of a Capuchin Friar. He was invested in 1943. His first profession was in 1944 and he perpetually professed in 1947. Fr. Silas was ordained in 1951. Until his retirement in 1996, Fr. Silas served in a variety of ministries, including retreat work, post-novitiate formation and chaplaincy.

He is survived by his siblings: Daniel Baumann, Sheboygan; Virginia Papa, Sheboygan Falls; and Barbara (Herb) Goeden, Peachtree, GA. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, great and great-great cousins, Capuchin brothers and Franciscan Seculars.

Fr. Silas was preceded in death by his parents Alfred J. and Gertrude (Martini) Baumann; brother Clarence J. Baumann; and sister and brother-in-law: Margie Baumann and Ermino P. Papa.

Visitation will be held Tuesday May 7, 2013 at ST. JOSEPH PARISH (404 W. Lawrence, Appleton) from 8:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at the St. Lawrence Friary Cemetery, Mt. Calvary.
