Our Dutch mother, Theodora (Dora) Johanna Spanjers, had a long, active 90 years of life culminating on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. She was born in Herpt Heusden, Netherlands. When she was 22 years old, she immigrated to the United States where she married her loving husband Tony, also from the Netherlands. Together on the farm, they raised four daughters: Elizabeth (Tom) Boyd, Sister Mary Ann Spanjers, OSF, Judy (Brian) Wagner and Carla (Mark) Nelessen. Oma/Grandma celebrated with each of her 11 grandkids. The Boyd family's Chris (Jessica), Anne-Marie (Stephen Basadur), Laura Theodora (Thomas) Owen, Sarah and Angelica Grace. The Wagner family's Jennifer (Peter) Mueller and Erin (Ryan) McClory. The Nelessen family's Eric (Audra), Kristin (Neal) Johanson, Spencer (Libby) and Luke! Oma/Grandma was thrilled to be part of her growing family especially her great grandchildren; Elyse, Chris and Jessica's daughter; Cameron, Caydon, Adelyn and Blake are Jennifer and Peter's children; Maggie, Erin and Ryan's daughter; Eric and Audra's children are Olafur, Alyosha; Maisy and Acacia are Kristin and Neal's daughters.
Dora was an outstanding seamstress. She had a green thumb. She raised beautiful flowers, spent many years canning, gardening, raising and picking oranges, apples, cherries and grapefruit. Dora enjoyed dancing all her life.
Dora grew up in the Netherlands riding a bicycle. This continued to be one of her favorite modes of transportation and fun. She was a 100-mile Senior Olympic champion. Her love for skiing and swimming kept her filled with energy and brought her joy during her retirement years in Sun City, AZ.
She is preceded in death by her husband Tony (Antonius); granddaughter Angelica Grace Boyd; parents: Andreas and Elisabeth (Buijs) Van Den Brandt; and nine siblings. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Josephine Bleumink, Annie Spanjers, Lena Spanjers and Truus Van Den Brandt; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Dora was a woman of faith. As an active member of St. Edward Parish, Mackville, she was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and served a term as treasurer. She was also a member of Sts. Anne and Joachim Parish, Sun City, AZ. She loved praying to the Virgin Mary, whose statue watched over her flowers and her Sun City home. Her devotion to St. Joseph accompanied her on her journey home to God.
