Donald Francis Houdek, age 96, was called to his eternal home on August 23, 2024. He was born on November 27, 1927, to the late Frank and Emma (Bunker) Houdek. Upon completing his education at Kewaunee High School, Class of 1945, he enlisted in the US Army Air Force, where his service took him to Okinawa. Post enlistment, he returned stateside and pursued a degree in electrical engineering from DeVry University of Chicago. In 1955, he found his life partner in Carole Mae Heins and they were wed at St. Joseph Church, Appleton.
Professionally, Don worked at WHBY Radio before becoming a partner at Tri City TV. Later, in 1960, he joined Miller Electric as an Electronics Engineer, where he remained for 35 years. His love for aviation led him to become a pilot and member of the EAA. A talented baritone, he sang with the Fox Valley Aires Barbershop chorus for 30 years. He was an active member of the Appleton Golden Kiwanis. In his retirement, he volunteered at Appleton Medical Center and worked with Meals on Wheels.
Don and Carole traveled to many wonderful places, with Hawaii being their favorite. In faith, Don was a long-time member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was a great bowler, enjoyed golf, boating, fishing and playing sheepshead with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Carole, his two sisters Gladys Andrews and Evelyn Archer.
He is survived by his daughter, Kay Kennedy (Joel LeGrande) Green Bay; his sons: Steven (Julie) Houdek, Kaukauna; Jeff, Appleton; and Jim, California, a niece, Michelle (Jim) Fietzer and their daughter Andrea (Emmanuel) Aurigue; and nephew, Scott (LeAnn) Andrews.
In accordance with Don's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton, WI.
The family would like to thank the staff at Country Villa in Little Chute and the Hospice team from Moments in Appleton for their loving care and support. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
