Bro. Dismas (George) Seward, O.F.M. Cap., age 86, died Wednesday February 29, 2012 at St. Paul Elder Services, Kaukauna. He was born in New Orleans, LA on July 21, 1925 to the late George and Alvina (Kaacks) Seward. Bro. Dismas was the youngest child of three boys, all raised by a nanny. He was drafted into the military at the age of 18, served in World War II and the Korean War, where he was on the front line as a medical and surgical technician for 11 ½ years. After his discharge from the U.S. Army he entered the Capuchin Order at Marathon, WI, on April 5, 1956, making his First Profession on April 6, 1957 as a Third Order Brother. His Capuchin calling was influenced by a few Capuchins he met overseas in Okinawa, a missionary post for Capuchins since the time of World War II. Bro. Dismas later made a novitiate year and First Profession on April 18, 1983, became a professed member of the Capuchin Order with Perpetual Vows on April 11, 1986. Bro. Dismas has been stationed at St. Lawrence Friary and Seminary, Mt. Calvary, WI for all of his religious life. He served in many varied roles while at St. Lawrence Seminary and Friary as an Infirmarian, Dorm Prefect, Dean of Discipline, Vice Rector, Study Hall Prefect, Spiritual Director of Student and Vicar of the Capuchin Community at St. Lawrence Friary for 3 years. After many years of quiet service to the Capuchin community and seminary in uncounted ways, Bro. Dismas retired and devoted himself to more prayer and reflection.
Bro. Dismas is survived by one sibling: Edward Seward of Louisiana; and his Capuchin brothers of the Province of St. Joseph.
Visitation will be held Sunday March 4, 2012 at St. Lawrence Seminary Chapel, Mt. Calvary, beginning at 4:00 p.m. and concluding with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the St. Lawrence Seminary Chapel Monday March 5, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. Military honors will immediately follow. Interment in the Friary Cemetery in Mt. Calvary will take place in the spring.
