Anthony Eugene "Gene" Sprague Sr., Kimberly, age 91, died Monday October 26, 2015 at the St. Paul Home. He was born on the Sprague Farm in Chepachet, Rhode Island on April 28, 1924 to the late Walter and Florence (Ide) Sprague. Later that land was put into trust for public use.

Gene served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. Following his service in the military, he went on to graduate from Cornell University as a Mechanical Engineer in 1949. Gene worked at Nordberg Mfg. and Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee before moving to the Valley. He retired from Metso USA in Appleton. Following retirement, Gene volunteered with AARP, preparing taxes for 15 years.

Gene married Barbara (Van Handel) Peterson on May 13, 2000.


Gene is survived by his wife Barbara; children: Suzanne (Larry) Lorenz of Milwaukee; Rebecca (Doug) Gilbert of Appleton; Tom (Jan) Rogers of Greenville; and step son Tom Peterson of Little Chute; and brother-in-law: Ray (Marge) Van Handel; friends Rudy (Emily) Garza and Fr. Joe Wolf O.F.M. Cap. He is further survived by many grandchildren, step children, nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his previous wives: Margaret, Esther and Lucille; son, Anthony Sprague Jr.; and brother, Oliver Sprague.

Visitation will be held Friday October 30, 2015 at ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH (100 N. Drew St. Appleton) beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of Funeral at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Ed Smith officiating.
